Restoration Project Approach

The Watershed Improvement Program favors state-of-the-art restoration techniques--often the "low-tech" approach--to plan and implement restoration of Oakland's creeks. For example, willow cuttings shaped into "fascines" are driven into creek banks where they take root and hold soil in place. (In the "olden days," concrete was used to stabilize creek banks.) Creek bank stabilization, habitat enhancement, and removal of non-native plants to make room for plants native to Oakland's riparian (creekside) areas are just some of Oakland's creek improvement goals.
