The Mayor and the Public Works Agency reached a tentative settlement agreement with Waste Management in lieu of liquidated damages, resulting from the July 2007 lock out of Local 70 employees.This agreement includes expanded recycling services for Oakland residents; illegal dumping services and citywide beautification; and promotion of, publicity on, and education about waste reduction and zero waste campaigns.

Green Food Packaging Ordinance - Effective January 1, 2007, Oakland food vendors may no longer use polystyrene foam (such as Styrofoam) disposable food service ware.
In December 2006, the Oakland City Council unanimously adopted a Zero Waste Strategic Plan to guide the City’s planning, decision-making, and actions toward achieving the sustainability Goal of Zero Waste by 2020, which the City established in March 2006.
Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Policy
On July 10, 2007, the Oakland City Council adopted an Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) Policy that requires City purchasers to consider environmental attributes along with traditional purchasing factors such as performance, safety, price and local availability, when making purchasing decisions.

Helps Oakland repave streets, fill pot holes, install traffic signals and street signs, speed bumps, repair sidewalks and address traffic safety issues, and fund bicycle and pedestrian safety projects.

Measure DD
In November 2002, over 80% of Oakland voters passed Measure DD, a $198.25 million bond measure. Funded projects include parks, trails, bridges, a recreation center, historic building renovations, land acquisition, and creek restoration.

Keeps our parks green and facilities clean and maintains thousands of street trees and street lights for safety.
