Below is a summary report on the winter storm-related activities for this past week, for your reference. As you will see below, we have received slightly more rainfall (20% more) compared to this time last year; however, we have been able to respond to this within our current staffing resources.

• Summary of Storm-Related Activities for Monday, December 19, through Thursday, December 22, 2005

Intermittent scattered showers with occasional rain brought a cumulative 2.05 inches of rain to Oakland this week.

Regularly scheduled standby crews along with the support of 9 extra crews were able to handle complaints during the evening and overnight hours without reopening the Municipal Service Center. Throughout the week, PWA crews responded to more than 107 calls for storm drain or sewer flooding, mudslides or tree damage. All calls were responded to quickly and efficiently.

The Municipal Service Center and Shepherd Canyon facilities will not be open this weekend or December 26 holiday for sand bags and plastic sheeting distribution to Oakland residents . The facilities will reopen on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m.

• Location of Problem Areas

• 34th Street and Wood Street – sewer overflow caused by debris in the manhole blocking the line (main?). Crews dispatched early Monday morning to implement spill mitigation procedures, abate the overflow by bypassing the damaged sewer, and assess damage. Repairs to sewer manhole structure in process.
• 106th Avenue and San Leandro Street underpass – Closed at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, 12/21, due to moderate flooding caused by steady rains, high tide and a pump malfunction. Pump repairs are underway and underpass is expected to reopen by late evening Friday, 12/23.

• More than 300 sandbags were distributed to residents and to various Fire Stations to replenish their supplies from both the Municipal Service Center and the Shepherd Canyon satellite facility.
