Creek-to-Bay Day is held annually on the third Saturday of September, concurrent and in conjunction with the international and statewide Coastal Cleanup Day. This year's event is happening on Saturday, September 20, 2008, from 9 am - Noon.
Creek-to-Bay Day is held at numerous sites throughout Oakland and at Lake Merritt, so you can choose a location convenient for or interesting to you.
No pre-registration is necessary unless you are bringing a large group of volunteers (see next answer). Individuals, families, and small groups can simply show up at any one of the sites on the morning of the event. Participants will be asked to sign-in and sign a liability waiver.
If you are part of a group of 30 or more, please contact the Creek-to-Bay Day Coordinator at 238-7611. Let the coordinator know how many people you plan to bring. If you do not already have a site in mind, the Coordinator will direct you to a site that is set up to handle large groups.
Children are welcome! Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. If you are bringing a group of children, please also bring a minimum of one adult to supervise every four children. City of Oakland staff and volunteer site coordinators are not responsible for supervising children.
Different activities will happen at each location. Past projects have included: litter pickup, non-native plant removal, storm drain stenciling, and planting native plants. A site coordinator will describe activities and direct volunteers to projects. A list of projects scheduled at each location will be posted on this website by the end of August.
Wear clothing appropriate to outdoor work such as long pants and close-toed shoes. The event will happen rain or shine, so dress according to the weather. You may also want to bring your own work gloves. If you bring your own cup for drinks and a water bottle, you will help reduce the amount of waste generated by the event (cups and water will be provided).
Water will be available at all of the locations and light snacks are provided for volunteers either in the morning or at the end of the event.
Yes. If you need credit for community service, you can receive a voucher that will list the number of hours you worked following the event.
